    Information about CID for Board Candidates

    CID Mission Statement 
    To increase the social, educational, and economic participation of persons with disabilities in San Mateo County, and to encourage, support, and provide options for self determination, equal access, and freedom of choice.


    The Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is a private, nonprofit corporation located in San Mateo, California.  Incorporated in 1979, CID is a consumer-driven, community-based, services and advocacy organization serving San Mateo County. CID is one of 29 Independent Living Centers in California dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities to obtain greater independence in all areas of their lives.  By federal mandate, the majority of Staff, Management, and Board must be people with disabilities.

    Annually, CID assists more than 2,000 people with visible and hidden disabilities through direct and indirect services.  CID also helped more than 3,400 people with disabilities with individual and systems advocacy issues.

    CID's programs and services include providing: American With Disabilities Act (ADA ) consultation and training; group and individual peer support; home modifications; assistive technology resource referrals; independent living skills training and consultation; and information and referral to access tools, strategies, and accommodations that make living in the community possible.  CID also provides support to individuals who are transitioning from living in a nursing home to living in the community.

    CID Board Member Job Description

    General Description: 

    Board members have overall responsibility for the organization.  They accomplish this through a process of decision-making, supervision and oversight. 

    Duties:          

    It is the responsibility of each Board member to:
    1. Most importantly, have a passion for CID's mission.  Further this mission through implementing CID's by-laws and policies, and advocating in the community.
    2. Understand and endorse independent living philosophy and disability rights.
    3. Carry out legal responsibilities for the agency.  Members are accountable, individually and collectively, for the organization’s actions, including legal, financial, and planning continuity.
    4. Establish general agency policies.
    5. Select, supervise, and remove the Executive Director.
    6. Attend all monthly and special board meetings, in person or by speakerphone, unless ill or out of town. Prepare for all meetings by having read all packet materials in advance.
    7. Understand that fundraising is one of the most important aspects of being a board member.  Actively participate in fundraising activities. 
    8. Be an ambassador of CID.  Strive to share your passion and knowledge for the agency's mission and strategies within the community.
    Requirements of Board Members:
    • Board members donate at least 6 hours of their time each month to CID by preparing for and attending board meetings, serving on Board committees, and representing CID at community events.
    • CID expects Board members to contribute financially to the organization commensurate with their abilities.  Board members are also expected to cultivate other financial contributors to CID on behalf of the agency
    • 51% of CID's Board is required, by law, to be persons with a significant disability.

    Term of Office:
    Members of the Board of Directors of CID serve voluntarily, without compensation, for a three-year term.
