We're asking applicants to put pen to paper
and share their thoughts on a variety of essay topics

*All applicants need a CCY Member as a sponsor, so keep an eye out for young people who you believe should apply. Everything else is easy. Applicants just need to email or fax their application and essay by the February 26th deadline.  We'll do the rest.

An ADA Petition from the National Federation of the Blind to Consider

1/25/2016

Comments

Dear Colleagues,

On July 26, 2010, the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the historic Americans with Disabilities Act, an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking  addressing the obligation of public accommodations to provide websites that are accessible to individuals with disabilities was issued by the United States Department of Justice. At the time, President Obama  correctly observed that these proposed rules would be “the most important updates to the ADA since its original enactment.” Yet the release date of the actual rule proposal for revising the Title III regulations of the ADA, originally scheduled for January of 2012, has been extended until sometime in 2018, eight years beyond the issuance of the original ANPRM and at least a year after the end of his administration. Having originally taken a strong stance on the importance of these regulations, it now seems like the Obama administration is wishing to wash its hands of them entirely.

As people with disabilities and organizations representing people with disabilities, we know first-hand that equal access to the internet is paramount for education, to obtain and retain employment, and for everyday tasks such as paying bills, online shopping, booking travel, etc. We will not sit idly by as the administration attempts to sideline this critical access issue, so the
National Federation of the Blind has launched a petition demanding, in the strongest terms possible, that the administration issue these regulations immediately.

Upon reaching 100,000 signatures, the Obama administration is required to respond, so in addition to sharing our
we the people petition via Email and your social media outlets, please personally ask 10 family members, friends, and colleagues to sign it and share it as well. A little personal contact goes a long way! 100,000 signatures is a lofty goal, but with the support of our partners in the disability community, we know we will reach that number.

We know that given the necessary tools and training, people with disabilities can reach our full potential. Join us in demanding the Obama administration release these critical regulations immediately.
Best,

...Gabe

That Time The United States Sterilized 60,000 Of Its Citizens

1/7/2016 Alexandra Minna Stern | Professor, University of MichiganZócalo Public Square
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/sterilization-united-states_568f35f2e4b0c8beacf68713

Not too long ago, more than 60,000 people were sterilized in the United States based on eugenic laws. Most of these operations were performed before the 1960s in institutions for the so-called “mentally ill” or “mentally deficient.” In the early 20th century across the country, medical superintendents, legislators, and social reformers affiliated with an emerging eugenics movement joined forces to put sterilization laws on the books. Such legislation was motivated by crude theories of human heredity that posited the wholesale inheritance of traits associated with a panoply of feared conditions such as criminality, feeblemindedness, and sexual deviance. Many sterilization advocates viewed reproductive surgery as a necessary public health intervention that would protect society from deleterious genes and the social and economic costs of managing “degenerate stock.” From today’s vantage point, compulsory sterilization looks patently like reproductive coercion and unethical medical practice.

At the time, however, sterilization both was countenanced by the U.S. Supreme Court (in the 1927
Buck v. Bell case) and supported by many scientists, reformers, and lawmakers as one prong of a larger strategy to improve society by encouraging the reproduction of the “fit” and restricting the procreation of the “unfit.” In total, 32 U.S. states passed sterilization laws between 1907 and 1937, and surgeries reached their highest numbers in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Beginning in the 1970s, state legislatures began to repeal these laws, finding them antiquated and discriminatory, particularly towards people with disabilities.
