CID RECIEVES GRANT FROM SAN BRUNO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

2/4/2017

Comments

San Mateo – January 31, 2017 – Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $12,074 grant from the San Mateo Community Foundation to start an emergency preparedness program for people with disabilities in San Mateo County.

CID is a non-profit, non-residential independent living center, which serves the needs of disabled people in San Mateo County. Programs such as accessible home modifications, benefits counseling, and systems change advocacy, have been directly and indirectly benefitting the lives of thousands of San Mateo residents for the past 38 years.

John McGlothlin, San Bruno Community Foundation Board Member, sees emergency preparedness as another way for CID to serve its community, particularly in the wake of the PG&E gas pipeline explosion which occurred in 2010. The SBCF was formed as a result of a monetary settlement between the City of San Bruno and PG&E.

“The fire impacted our whole community, not just that one neighborhood,” McGlothlin said. “We realize that most everyone knows someone who is disabled, or has a disability themselves, and we want to partner with agencies and organizations who will help make sure no one is ever forgotten when it comes to preparing for a disaster.”

Donna Reed, CID’s Program Manager and Interim-Executive Director couldn’t agree more. “This money is going to allow us to include members of the disability community in all aspects of emergency management,” Reed said. “In line with our independent living philosophy, we will give people with disabilities the tools to participate in their own emergency planning, and help create partnerships between people, and emergency preparedness professionals.”
