CID RECIEVES GRANT FROM SAN BRUNO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

2/4/2017

Comments

San Mateo – January 31, 2017 – Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $12,074 grant from the San Mateo Community Foundation to start an emergency preparedness program for people with disabilities in San Mateo County.

CID is a non-profit, non-residential independent living center, which serves the needs of disabled people in San Mateo County. Programs such as accessible home modifications, benefits counseling, and systems change advocacy, have been directly and indirectly benefitting the lives of thousands of San Mateo residents for the past 38 years.

John McGlothlin, San Bruno Community Foundation Board Member, sees emergency preparedness as another way for CID to serve its community, particularly in the wake of the PG&E gas pipeline explosion which occurred in 2010. The SBCF was formed as a result of a monetary settlement between the City of San Bruno and PG&E.

“The fire impacted our whole community, not just that one neighborhood,” McGlothlin said. “We realize that most everyone knows someone who is disabled, or has a disability themselves, and we want to partner with agencies and organizations who will help make sure no one is ever forgotten when it comes to preparing for a disaster.”

Donna Reed, CID’s Program Manager and Interim-Executive Director couldn’t agree more. “This money is going to allow us to include members of the disability community in all aspects of emergency management,” Reed said. “In line with our independent living philosophy, we will give people with disabilities the tools to participate in their own emergency planning, and help create partnerships between people, and emergency preparedness professionals.”

Eddie Roberts' Burlingame High School Yearbook Dedication

A friend to the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities recently shared his copy of his 1957 Burlingame High School Yearbook. The photo above shows the dedication of that year's 'Panther Tracks' going to Ed Roberts. The dedication reads:
Occasionally we meet a person whose courage and determination are such that he is able to give of his strength to those who know him. Such a person is Eddie Roberts.

In 1953, Ed, who was hospitalized with polio, received the first diploma ever to be given at Burlingame Intermediate School. Our present class of 1957 shared this graduation happiness with him.

Today, Ed is a member of our student body by means of a home-to-school telephone hookup which is provided through the generosity of the San Mateo Junior Women's Club.

Ed not only participates in class but is active in school affairs as well. He writes "Sidelines", the well known sports article which appears in the "B". He is a member of the Junior Statesman Club and is also a member of the Celt's Hi-Y Club.

To Eddie Roberts, whose spirit is an inspiration to us all, we, the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1957 edition of Panther Tracks.

Early Voting Options Available for Voters with Disabilities
A Service to Voters with Disabilities

November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division wants to be sure that registered San Mateo County voters with disabilities are aware of the various options available to help them vote during the 29-day period leading up to each election, including the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election. During this early voting period, registered voters with disabilities may participate in the standard Vote by Mail program, which allows voters to receive a ballot by mail and return that ballot by mail or in person. In addition, registered voters with disabilities have three other options:

  1. They may request to have a Vote by Mail ballot personally delivered to the voter’s home at a convenient time by Elections Division staff, who will assist them in marking and returning the ballot.
  2. They may request that Elections Division staff bring an accessible version of the County’s electronic voting machine to a convenient location such as the voter’s home for the voter to cast an electronic ballot privately and independently. This system includes audio ballot reading technology, uniquely shaped large buttons with Braille descriptions, a low height to permit wheelchair-based use, and use of adaptive interface devices such as sip-and-puff and tactile input switches to control the input. The Elections Division staff will set up the equipment and be available to assist the voter during the process.
  3. They may request that the Elections Division staff arrange free transportation for the voter to and from a Voting Center during the early voting period, where the County’s accessible electronic voting machine may be used by the voter.

These options are generally available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week during the early voting period starting 29 days before the election. Special accommodations can be made for service outside established hours.

To use any of the options listed above, registered San Mateo County voters may contact the Registration & Elections Division at 1.650.312.5222 at least 24-hours in advance in order to schedule assistance. (Please note that there is a deadline for enrolling in the standard Vote by Mail program or to register to vote, but voters who are already registered in San Mateo County may request the three options listed above during the entire early voting period.)

These options only apply to San Mateo County registered voters. Other voters should contact their county elections official for assistance.

If you have questions or to schedule one of the options listed above, please contact the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division at 1.650.312.5222 or registrar@smcare.org.
